Your brain is like a train on a track. Once the track has been laid, your thoughts will follow that same pathway until a new track has been set.
The goal of this exercise is to help your brain switch tracks.
To do this, try adding a, “But what if…” to each critical or self judgmental thought that you struggle with.
EXAMPLE: If you tell yourself that, “you’ll never amount to anything!”, change it to “...But what if I can be successful?”
Let’s try some other ones:
Calling yourself a loser becomes “But what if I’m not?
Being indecisive and “I don’t know what I’m doing!” becomes, “But what if I do?”
Once you get used to Shutting down the negativity you struggle with and start questioning your thoughts with the “But what if…” then add a positive.
Redefine who you are with some kind of truth. (Hint: use the opposite of what you just used.)
“I’m a loser!” becomes, “But what if I’m not? What if I’m exceptional!
“I don’t know what I’m doing!” becomes, “But what if I do?” Maybe I’m just scared to give it a try because I don’t want to look stupid.”
By constantly challenging old unhelpful thought patterns, you weaken the old negative pathway in the brain and begin to strengthen the new, healthier one.
YOU DON'T NEED DECADES TO CHANGE.
You just need to practice on a regular basis. The more you practice the faster your brain will shift. This will result in you believing in yourself more.
Eventually you find yourself doing those things previously you had told yourself that you couldn't do, and possibly even liking yourself more.
And for the icing on the cake…put a big smile on your face every time you practice doing this exercise. This helps give your brain the message that, “I've got this!”
